PWS Updates – July 2025

June 30, 2025 By SPC

We hosted the Boise Presbytery PW Spring Gathering on April 26th. The theme of the Gathering was being good stewards to God’s creation which we correlated with Earth Day, We started with a light breakfast and fellowship. Our own Dena Duke presented the devotion and Deanna Watson did the meditation at the brief worship service. The speaker for the day was Catherine Chartudi, a retired member of the recycling services here in Boise, who spoke about recycling, and how to recycle, and the many changes that have happened, and will be happening in recycling in the Treasure Valley and surrounding areas. A very pertinent topic for today’s climate change environment and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The attendance was good and included several attendees from local presbyterian churches.

I hope you were able to attend, either in person or online, our Gifts of Women service on June 1. We installed and commissioned new and returning officers to PWS. Helen Winkle was honored with the Presbyterian Women in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A) Honorary Life Membership for her faithful service within the church. Congratulations, Helen!

We will be off for the summer, but will have a planning meeting to gather ideas for our pro- grams for the upcoming year. We will begin our gatherings again on September 3rd. A reminder that our gatherings are on the first Wednesday of each month from September through June. All women of Southminster are invited to attend. You do not need to be a member of the church to attend. We love to see new faces. Welcome!!

PWS – May 2025 Updates

May 1, 2025 By SPC

We are planning a Women’s Sunday service. It will be held on June 1, 2025. This will be a renewal of our annual “Gifts of Women Sunday”, but had to stop due to Covid. We will be scheduling this annual women’s service on a regular basis going forward. It will include the installation of Presbyterian Women of Southminster’s officers. We have always held our installation during our June gathering each year, but have decided that the congregation should know who our officers are and what they do for PWS, and the church. We hope you will attend this special service.

I will have an update on the Boise Presbytery Presbyterian Women’s spring Gathering, that we hosted on April 26, in the June Messenger. Stay tuned!

Our next PWS gathering will be May 7. Our program will be Nancy Ives, who will be speaking about her travel experiences. We hope to see you there.

PWS – April 2025 Updates

March 31, 2025 By SPC

We are finalizing our plans for our hosting of the Spring Gathering for the Boise Presbytery PW. Our theme will be centered around this year’s bible study and connected to Earth Day which is April 22. The bible study is titled “Let Justice Roll Down: God’s call to care for neighbors and all creation.” It has nine lessons that relate to being good stewards of our earth.

The date for the Spring Gathering is April 26 at 9AM here at Southminster, and I would like to remind all the women in our congregation that they are graciously invited to this event. Worship will be led by Deanna Watson, devotions by Dena Duke, and our main speaker will be Catherine Chertudi. Please RSVP to me (Mary) by April 20 if you would like to join us for lunch (suggested $10 donation) and let us know if you need child care so it can be arranged.

Also aligned with Earth Day and our studies is our plan to practice what we are learning by placing orange bag recycling bins around our facility. You will notice the bins in the Narthex, the Cana room and kitchen, the Genesis room, and by the blue bin at the downstairs exit door. Printed instructions are on each bin as to what can be recycled in them.

Our next Gathering is on April 2 at 11A. Our program will be an Earth Day presentation, Please join us.

Being Earth’s Stewards – New Recycling Options at Southminster

February 28, 2025 By SPC

Presbyterian Women of Southminster are participating in a Bible Study this 2024/25 year called Let Justice Roll Down: God’s call to care for neighbors and all creation. It has nine topics that relate to being good stewards of the earth God has loaned to us. The monthly topics are: Environmental Justice, Land Justice, Food Justice, Water Justice, Air Quality, Climate Change, Economic Climate Justice, Intergenerational Justice, and Sustaining Creation’s Health for All.

We feel that we should practice what we are learning. To that end, four white bins with orange liners have been placed in the following areas:

  • Narthex food area
  • Cana Room by the coffeemakers
  • Just inside exterior basement door
  • Genesis Room

Laminated lists are posted on each bin for what is acceptable to be recycled. Full bags can be tied shut and placed inside the blue recycling bin just inside the exterior basement door. Replacement bags will be stored above the food area sink in the narthex. As our use of these new bins grows, it’s possible we’ll start to outpace our recycling contract. To avoid additional expenses, members of PWS are prepared to take excess recycling to their homes to add to their own recycle collection at no added cost to them.
