Our Sunday School classes are starting up on Sept. 8th. Children are invited to wait at the stairs in the Narthex/Lobby after the church service to meet their teachers. Big news: we are breaking out a separate class for 6th and 7th graders! Please come join us for 30 minutes after worship each Sunday for a short lesson and games while the adults are visiting over coffee.
Want to Get a Head Start on Book Club?
The Southminster Book Club meets by Zoom at 7:00pm on the first Thursday of every month, from September-May. All are welcome to participate as you’re able.
Some folks like to get a head start on reading during the long sunny days of summer, so here’s a look ahead at the selections for Fall 2024.
- September – An Unfinished Love Story by Doris Kearns
- October – All Boys Aren’t Blue by George M Johnson [one of the most often banned books of the 2020s!]
- November – The Measure by Nikki Erlick
- December – North to the Night by Alvah Simon
All Church Retreat – Aug 9-11
Registration is now open for our annual All Church Retreat, which will be the weekend of August 9-11, 2024. The low cost of $30 per person (with a $70 maximum per family) will cover five meals, plus two nights lodging at Camp Sawtooth. Scholarships are available if needed and can be confidentially requested by contacting Pastor TJ.
To register, go to link.spcboise.org/sawtooth. Paper registration forms will also be available in the narthex from now until August 4. Checks for payment may be submitted to the church office with “All Church Retreat” in the memo line.
A Banned Book Conversation
Don’t You Dare Read This! Get your attention? I know when I was a kid if I was forbidden or even encouraged to NOT do something—whatever it was—that really piqued my interest. I just had to see what was forbidden. You know, like snooping for Christmas presents or eating an olive off the guest buffet. And although I was never told I couldn’t read something… reading was considered a harmless activity in my home (and kept me entertained and not talking so much)… I do remember those days in junior high where we would gather in a friend’s attic and read the “juicy” parts of something someone had found in “True Confessions” and other lurid periodicals. Half the time we didn’t even understand what we were reading and giggling about it.
If you would like to know some of the history of banned books and discuss some of the current activity regarding the same, please plan to attend Sunday School for Adults on April 21.
