Just One Thing – A New Discussion Group

May 22, 2025 By SPC

Are you feeling helpless about the state of the world? Do you find yourself paralyzed when you watch the news? If this is you, come and join Just One Thing, a group sponsored by our Peace, Justice, and Outreach Committee.

We will talk about our concerns, but we will not stop there. We also want to notice glimpses of grace and focus on that “just one thing” we can do to help, whether that is pray, write letters, or find a way to ground ourselves in our own community and church.

Meetings will vary according to interest, and everyone is welcome when they can attend. Starting on May 4, we will meet on the first Sunday of each month at 5:00pm in the Jean Moore Lounge. Contact Abby Wolford for more information.

What: Just One Thing, a new discussion group
When: First Sundays at 5:00pm (beginning May 4)
Where: Jean Moore Lounge, upper level of Southminster

How Not To Be Afraid – Summer Book Study

May 21, 2025 By SPC

This summer, Pastor TJ is leading a gentle, reflective book discussion based on How Not to Be Afraid by Gareth Higgins. We’ll gather twice (once at the beginning of summer and once at the end) as a book-end for a summer of independent “soulwork.” Between sessions, participants are invited to engage with a companion handout of weekly reflections inspired by the book’s themes. Our conversations will be grounded in compassion, curiosity, and courage for uncertain times.

Wed. June 18 at 1:00pm in Genesis Room
[independent, self-guided reflections during summer]
Wed. August 13 at 1:00pm in Genesis Room

This is a hybrid gathering—you’re welcome to join us in person or via Zoom (contact the church office for the link). Contact TJ if you’d like help getting a copy of the book or want to know more.

This is a space of joy, connection, and belonging for people of every identity and orientation.

We’ll have music, lawn games, and plenty of room to just be yourself. Got a favorite game? Bring it along and join the fun!  All ages of humans and well-behaved dogs are welcome. Please leave alcoholic beverages at home.

Bread for the World Advocacy Summit

May 1, 2025 By SPC

Southminster has been working on hunger locally through our support of the Grace Jordan Food Pantry, and nationally/internationally through our partnership with Bread for the World. This year, we’ve learned more about the systemic
problems that worsen hunger through a hunger simulation, and we’ve participated in letter writing to advocate for changes in the national legislature to help hunger.

If you are interested in pursuing advocacy further by participating in Bread For the World’s Advocacy Summit (Washington, DC, June 9-11, 2025) please visit the link below. It is the 50th anniversary of Bread For the World.

There is no deadline to register but the hotel blocks will only be reserved for the next month. Please also let Ann Agnew know if you want to attend (text her or email her). She is hoping to go and potentially share hotel expenses if acceptable.
