An open and affirming community, seeking a caring and just society.

Grace Jordan Food Pantry Donations

July 29, 2025 By SPC

Grace Jordan Elementary School will open for a new school year in mid-August and in preparation for this we are once again collecting food along with monetary donations! You’re invited to grab one of the “greatest needs” shopping lists (located in the Narthex near the shopping cart) and pick up a few things for our neighbors during your next grocery shopping trip.

As an added spiritual practice, consider saying a silent prayer of gratitude for the ready availability of items on the shelves, and for the families who will receive them.

Just One Thing – A New Discussion Group

May 22, 2025 By SPC

Are you feeling helpless about the state of the world? Do you find yourself paralyzed when you watch the news? If this is you, come and join Just One Thing, a group sponsored by our Peace, Justice, and Outreach Committee.

We will talk about our concerns, but we will not stop there. We also want to notice glimpses of grace and focus on that “just one thing” we can do to help, whether that is pray, write letters, or find a way to ground ourselves in our own community and church.

Meetings will vary according to interest, and everyone is welcome when they can attend. Starting on May 4, we will meet on the first Sunday of each month at 5:00pm in the Jean Moore Lounge. Contact Abby Wolford for more information.

What: Just One Thing, a new discussion group
When: First Sundays at 5:00pm (beginning May 4)
Where: Jean Moore Lounge, upper level of Southminster

This is a space of joy, connection, and belonging for people of every identity and orientation.

We’ll have music, lawn games, and plenty of room to just be yourself. Got a favorite game? Bring it along and join the fun!  All ages of humans and well-behaved dogs are welcome. Please leave alcoholic beverages at home.

Bread for the World Advocacy Summit

May 1, 2025 By SPC

Southminster has been working on hunger locally through our support of the Grace Jordan Food Pantry, and nationally/internationally through our partnership with Bread for the World. This year, we’ve learned more about the systemic
problems that worsen hunger through a hunger simulation, and we’ve participated in letter writing to advocate for changes in the national legislature to help hunger.

If you are interested in pursuing advocacy further by participating in Bread For the World’s Advocacy Summit (Washington, DC, June 9-11, 2025) please visit the link below. It is the 50th anniversary of Bread For the World.

There is no deadline to register but the hotel blocks will only be reserved for the next month. Please also let Ann Agnew know if you want to attend (text her or email her). She is hoping to go and potentially share hotel expenses if acceptable.

Being Earth’s Stewards – New Recycling Options at Southminster

February 28, 2025 By SPC

Presbyterian Women of Southminster are participating in a Bible Study this 2024/25 year called Let Justice Roll Down: God’s call to care for neighbors and all creation. It has nine topics that relate to being good stewards of the earth God has loaned to us. The monthly topics are: Environmental Justice, Land Justice, Food Justice, Water Justice, Air Quality, Climate Change, Economic Climate Justice, Intergenerational Justice, and Sustaining Creation’s Health for All.

We feel that we should practice what we are learning. To that end, four white bins with orange liners have been placed in the following areas:

  • Narthex food area
  • Cana Room by the coffeemakers
  • Just inside exterior basement door
  • Genesis Room

Laminated lists are posted on each bin for what is acceptable to be recycled. Full bags can be tied shut and placed inside the blue recycling bin just inside the exterior basement door. Replacement bags will be stored above the food area sink in the narthex. As our use of these new bins grows, it’s possible we’ll start to outpace our recycling contract. To avoid additional expenses, members of PWS are prepared to take excess recycling to their homes to add to their own recycle collection at no added cost to them.
