Are you ready to share God’s inclusive love with our community? Boise Pride will be September 8-10, 2023. Southminster will again host a booth on Saturday and Sunday, and also hope for a large turnout for the parade on Sunday morning. Want to help with planning? Contact Ann Agnew or reach out to the church office.
Community Pantry – Summer Updates
The end of the school year is upon us, so to prevent food from going unused on pantry shelves, we will not be accepting items for the Grace Jordan pantry from May-July. Food/toiletry donations will resume in August, so the pantry can be fully stocked and ready for the fall. We’ll continue to welcome financial contributions so we can get a jump start with pantry staples at the start of the new school year.
Thanks to the generosity of the Southminster congregation, 19 carts full of donated goods were delivered to Grace Jordan this school year, which is approximately 99% of all donations the pantry received. Because of you, families in need have had the food and supplies they’ve needed to survive. Thanks be to God for this display of hospitality and welcome.
Carpenter’s Gift
Occasionally, we have a need for handy-hands to assist with home repair projects for members and friends of Southminster who have specific needs. Do you like to paint? Replace carpet? Make minor electrical repairs? Use your pickup truck to take a load to the dump? Contact TJ to be added to a list for an unofficial “Carpenter’s Gift ” group.
Though these volunteers will be called upon rather rarely, we are likely to have an immediate need in May.
Covenant Network Updates
The spring board meeting of the Covenant Network of Presbyterians was held in Austin, Texas in March. TJ is a member of the board, and Southminster is a long-standing partner congregation of Covenant Network.
The following are some brief highlights of the meeting:
• Engaging Global Mission Partners— some of the PC(USA)’s world mission partners are seeking support for LGBTQIA+ advocacy and support in their local contexts. This is an exciting new venture for Covenant Network to support the church at work in the world
• The “Covenant Fellows” Program— a trained cohort of fellows will be called upon to preach, teach, and consult with congregations and presbyteries in expanding welcome and equity to LGBTQIA+ people in the church and community. (TJ is on the coordination team for this brand new effort).
• Expanding “Covenant Conversations”— After piloting this program in Boise several years ago, Covenant Network is on track to host at least 4 weekend events for LGBTQIA+ welcome/affirmation in 2023 alone!
Thank you for your continued support and prayers of the Covenant Network mission, as we continue to work together in celebrating the worth and dignity of all God’s people.
Weekly Silent Prayer Vigils
As the 2023 Idaho State Legislative Session begins, the Interfaith Equality Coalition invites members and friends of Southminster to weekly prayer vigils in front of the Capitol building. This group works to bring equality, justice, and dignity to all people in Idaho, particularly LGBTQIA+ people.
Silent prayer vigils will be held every Wednesday from 12:00-12:30pm from now until the end of the legislation session.
