Bread for the World Presentation – June 2

April 30, 2024 By SPC

Do you ever wish that you could do more to tackle some of the big problems of our world? Southminster Presbyterian Church is very active in our local community to help prevent hunger. But…..what about beyond that? What about the larger problem of world hunger? Bread for the World is a Christian advocacy organization that is actively working to influence decision makers with the goal of ending world hunger.

David Gist, the western organizer of Bread For The World, will be visiting Boise, ID June 1- June 4. He will be at Southminster Presbyterian Church for worship on June 2 and he will be leading our adult education class after worship from 11 am – 12 noon. During this time he will talk about hunger and about things that Bread For The World is doing. It will be a great opportunity for us to find out how we can do more on a systems level to affect change in the world.

While Bread for the World is a new conversation partner for us at Southminster, we have been tangentially connected for many years! The PC(USA)’s Presbyterian Hunger Program, supported with donations from the One Great Hour of Sharing offering we receive each year, partners with Bread for the World in its work.

Pentecost Special Offering – 5/19

April 29, 2024 By SPC

We will receive the Pentecost Offering, one of the four special offerings of the PC(USA), on Pentecost Sunday (May 19). This offering unites us in a church-wide effort to support the health, safety, and nurture of children, youth, and young adults in our local neighborhood and around the world. Through the Pentecost Offering, we partner in the nurture of faith for young people who will bear witness to God’s Grace in the generations to come. To make a donation, look for offering envelopes in the narthex, or write
“Pentecost” in the memo line of a check made out to Southminster.

Grace Jordan Food Pantry – Summer Plans

April 29, 2024 By SPC

As the school year winds down at Grace Jordan Elementary School we are reminded that summer is particularly difficult for families who rely on school for meal insecurity assistance. We hope to collect all kinds of nonperishable food items, household items, and personal care items to distribute to families until the last day of school on May 23. We also plan to collect funds to purchase Walmart gift cards as a supplement for families who face three long months of summer.

The Peace, Justice and Outreach Committee has decided to attempt to continue our mission with Grace Jordan Food Pantry through the summer while school is out. So we are asking folks to continue to donate nonperishable food items, household items and personal care items. We will be packaging them in bags so that when those families come to the church they will just pick up a bag or two. Alternatively you can donate money by writing Grace Jordan Food Pantry on the memo line of a check donation. These items will be available to families on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays from 10 am-3 pm and Saturdays from 10 am-Noon during the months of June and July. We will need one volunteer to be at the church to greet potential families on Saturdays from 10 am-Noon. There is a sign up sheet in back of the church or contact Ann Agnew if you have questions or comments. Please help us to continue this most wonderful ministry to our community.

One Great Hour of Sharing Offering

March 6, 2024 By TJ Remaley

On Easter Sunday, March 31, we will collect the One Great Hour of Sharing offering, one of the four special mission offerings of the PC(USA). Those who took a “Gracie” fish bank home with them are asked to return their bank by Easter morning. You can also participate in the offering by looking for a OGHS offering envelope or writing a check to Southminster with “OGHS” in the memo line.

One Great Hour of Sharing is celebrating its 75th Anniversary this year, and supports Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, the Presbyterian Hunger Program, and the Self-Development of People initiative.
